What is Metal Clay?
This product comes to us from Japan. It has been used there for quite some time, however just recently introduced to the United States.
There are a couple of manufacturer's of this medium (referred to as metal clay). Aida Chemicals of Japan developed a method of recovering silver - a waste product of the film development industry - combined this "waste with binders and - VOILA- metal clay. And the birth of ART CLAY. I love ART CLAY for several reasosns - but most of all - it's GREEN! This medium allows anyone with a desire to create silver works of art! You roll, mold, shape, carve your design with this moist, pliable clay. Dry it, lightly sand (very similar to working with greenware) - fire - most pieces can be fired with a butane torch - and polish. These are the only steps involved! You design and create your own works of art. Best of all, (prior to firing) if you are not happy with your creation - you can recycle it back into clay! Virtually no waste. Once your creation is fired, you are left with .999 silver - or fine silver. (Sterling is .925 and prone to tarnish since it is combined with other metal alloys).
Unlike traditional metalworking, there are no epensive tools and equipment to purchase - let alone a place to keep them! You can carry what you need in a small tool box!
